Watteau. Art - Market - Crafts
2021-10-09 - 2022-01-09
Berlin, Charlottenburg Palace - New Wing
2021 marks three hundred years since the death of acclaimed French painter Antoine Watteau (1684-1721). Watteau was celebrated during his lifetime. Admiration for this artist continues to this day, and his works are coveted collector's items. After the Louvre in Paris, SPSG owns the most important collection of paintings by Watteau. The special exhibition Antoine Watteau: Art - Market - Crafts in Charlottenburg Palace honours this outstanding 18th-century painter. The exhibition centres around one of Watteau's most acclaimed works: The Shop Sign of the Art Dealer Gersaint. The painting was acquired by Friedrich the Great (1712-1786) in 1746 and has been considered a masterpiece since its creation.
